Done is better than perfect

If ever there was a secret to success, it’s this:

Done is better than perfect.

Waiting for something to be perfect is a crisis of confidence. It’s turning up the volume on the little voice in your head that says You’re not ready yet. Don’t put yourself out there until you are.

Years ago when I first opened my office, I turned my attention to office supplies. I had to get just the right supplies before I could invite clients into the space. Let’s face it – I was stalling until I felt more “office-worthy”. It took a little tough love from my coach to remind me that different colored post-it notes are pretty but they don’t make my business grow. Clients do.

Waiting for something to be perfect before you consider it done is the human equivalent of a hamster on a wheel. Lots of running, but not actually getting anywhere.

Back in my corporate days, our department included two project managers. One of them wouldn’t release any project plan until it was 100% perfect. The other would get enough in place for the team to start, then build out the rest of it. Any guesses whose projects finished on time and whose were late?

Waiting for something to be perfect leads to missed opportunities. No one can sign up for your workshop / talk / webinar / new program until you actually offer it. The bonus for offering something before it’s “done”? You can actually make changes to it based on clients’ feedback, making it even more valuable to them
