It’s none of my business

Last month, I got to spend almost a week at the APPO annual conference, working with their awesome members.

A gem that popped up a few times in our coaching groups was this incredible quote:

Your opinion is none of my business. 

Whoa.

So much power in this handful of words. It’s a beautiful way of saying: I get that you have strong thoughts on something I’m doing, and you don’t get to decide if what I’m doing is right for me. I’m not going to let you get in my way. 

That doesn’t mean it’s easy to move past an opinion, especially a negative one. How many times have you gotten a bunch of wonderful, glowing reviews and one lone dissatisfied dissenter? Which carries more weight, the positive list or the single thumbs-down? If you’re human, it’s probably the thumbs-down.

I’ll let you in on a little secret: the feedback we get from others is really a reflection of what’s going on for them, not us. Stand firm in what you know to be true for you, and let others work things out for themselves.
