The top 3 stressors in life

Jan 31, 2025

It was pointed out to me recently that one of the top 3 stressors in life is moving (joining the death of a loved one and divorce on this list).

This explains a lot.

I’ve recently moved from Fairfield County, CT to Boulder, CO. In many ways, it’s like moving to a completely different planet: there’s a very different culture with very different values. There is staggering natural beauty all around me. As one local promised: I can basically wear camping clothes all day every day.

This move is the culmination of a bold decision I made - deciding I would move to Boulder without having a clue what that would look like. It’s a source of pride for me that just 5 months later, I actually owned a house in the exact location I desired.

All this to say: I chose this and I am thrilled with my decision.

It’s also one of the most stressful periods of my life, ranking right up there with having cancer and losing loved ones.

What this looks like for me is struggling to complete work tasks (this is my first newsletter in 3 weeks). Struggling to get this new house in order. Struggling to exercise as much as I say I want to.

It’s funny, isn’t it? We can make decisions that lead to outcomes we’re happy about and also feel really stressed out about them.

If you’re anything like me, you might add a layer of guilt on this: I should be happy! I chose this! This is such a first world problem - others have it far worse than me!

Not helpful, right? Because now you’re adding to your stress - it becomes heavier and heavier and harder to move through.

Have you experienced this? I wonder if you’ve chosen something you wanted and found yourself sinking into stress. Or experienced a negative event that caused you stress and then layered some unhelpful guilt on top of it (I should be able to handle this better!)
