Where’s the thrill?

Apr 09, 2018

Recently I gave a talk on goal setting and one of the audience members said “I love that you ask Where’s the thrill?”

It’s one of the most important questions when you’re brainstorming new goal ideas. If you’re not asking Where’s the thrill? you’re missing out on a lot.

Where’s the thrill? elevates us. It means we’re saying no thanks to the same old thing and yes please to something bigger and better. We’re selecting goals that make our gut say “I have no idea how we’re going to do that,” and our heart say “Who cares? We’ll figure it out because we absolutely have to do this!”

Take a look at these goal examples. Which one are you more likely to throw yourself into?

  • Increase sales by 10% over last year
  • Speak on-stage at my association’s national conference

I’d fling myself into the second one, knowing that it would cause knee-shaking nerves, plenty of self-doubt and the most amazing sense of accomplishment once I’m done. It will probably also pay off far more in terms of new opportunities, relationships and, yes, sales.

Having a goal that thrills you makes it about a million percent more likely that you’ll do the work needed to get there, because you’re driven. Nothing will stop you, you’ll happily break through walls to achieve success.

If you aren’t thrilled by your goals, what’s the point? The next time you sit down to consider upcoming goals, be sure to find the ones that thrill.
