You’re a VIP

Mar 02, 2016

A few years back I attended the the National Speakers Association’s Winter Conference in Austin, TX. It was my very first NSA experience and I loved so much about it.

As a newbie, it was intimidating to fly across the country and show up to this conference to stake my claim in the speaking world. Thankfully, the good folks at NSA know exactly what to do with us rookies: they make us VIPs.

The very first day of the conference they have a first-timers orientation session. While that’s super-helpful, what I really loved was the VIP ribbon they gave us to wear on our name tags. This was the signal to everyone else that it was our first NSA conference and the effect was magical.

Every time someone noticed my VIP ribbon, they struck up a conversation with me. Most conversations ended with “Here’s my card. Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help you.” They weren’t selling services to me (I’m not in the business of hiring speakers), they were offering genuine support to someone who’s where they once were.

This VIP ribbon was my permission to approach anyone and everyone. It gave me confidence to walk right up to a person whose talk I had enjoyed and say “Hi, my name is Lisa and I’m brand-new here.” Every single time it led to a wonderful conversation and often a great connection.

Here’s what I’d like you to do today: declare yourself a VIP. Make up your own ribbon or simply state it out loud. Feel your confidence rising as you do so. Use this newfound status to propel yourself forward throughout your day. Think of something you really want to do, but have been putting off. Starting right now, you’re a VIP. Pull your shoulders back, claim your status and take that action. You’ll be delighted at how you feel afterward, and ready to take the next right step.

The first step to amplifying your life is simplifying your day.
