Are you the person who does THAT?
Jul 23, 2021I’ve got a great mantra to help me tackle tough things. Whenever I feel daunted by something I have to/want to do, I tell myself “I want to be the person who does that.”
- Speaking at a large conference? I’m the person who does that.
- Leaving my safe corporate job to start a business? I’m the person who does that.
- Standing in my power when having a difficult conversation with someone? I’m the person who does that.
This works with challenges big & small. For instance, I’m doing some physical therapy for a long-term issue. My therapist told me that if I do my home exercises faithfully, I shouldn’t have this problem again.
History shows that every time I’ve started a regimen like this, I blow the doors off initially, but then drop off bit by bit until I’m not even sure what the exercises are any longer.
This time, though, I wanted to be the person who told her therapist that she did them every day. And that’s what I reminded myself every night when I got ready for bed. If I hadn’t done them earlier in the day, I couldn’t go to bed until I did.
Truthfully, I missed a day. But doing them 11 days out of 12 is an all-time world record for me, so I’m thrilled. And when I saw my therapist this week, she was thrilled too.
Finish this sentence: I want to be the person who . . .
