What are you running toward?

May 21, 2019

We’ve had some stress going on lately and I’ve wallowed in some bad habits to feel better. Unbelievably, eating too much chocolate has not created the change I want. I’m just as surprised as you!

As I walked around the block this morning, I made a mental list of what I’d like to change. This got me thinking more about how it feels to create change. I felt a reminder that whenever I move toward something I want, I’m far more successful than when I move away from something I don’t want.

Pulling your hand away from a burning match is great short-term. For me, it’s not an awesome long-term strategy. I do better when I have something glorious to work toward. I’ll bet you’re the same way.

There are probably studies to back this up, but we don’t really need that, do we? It just makes sense that moving toward something pleasurable is much more do-able than pulling ourselves away from something (and probably feeling deprived in the process).

When I work with my clients, we focus on the positive and what they want to run toward. I’ll let you in on a little secret: when you’re happily moving toward something, you naturally take your focus off moving away from something else. The more you do it, the easier and more effective it gets.

What change do you want to make? Are you running toward something wonderful?
