How to meet a rock legend (and do anything else you want to do)

Jan 31, 2020

Let’s just start with the big news:

I MET KEITH RICHARDS!

I’m so freakin’ excited about this, for a lot of reasons:

He’s always been my favorite guitarist (sure, there was that period in college when it was Eric Clapton, but soon after, I went right back to Keith).

I truly wanted to meet him at some point in my life.

This meeting happened EXACTLY the way I thought it would.

Wait, what?

You may think I’m crazy to say that. I say it’s crazy to NOT believe big things like this will happen exactly the way I want.

It all comes down to manifesting.

I’ve written about this before to illustrate big goals I achieved last year (see here and here). Manifesting is a simple concept:

  • Decide what you want
  • Get really really clear on what it looks like
  • Believe you can have it
  • Work your tail off
  • Act in integrity
  • Enjoy your big win

There’s a lot of power in knowing what you want and believing it’s possible. Those two steps take away so many roadblocks we tend to throw in front of ourselves. You have to believe something, so why not believe you deserve to get what you want?

Then the rubber has to meet the road – you have to take action. And it has to be the right action, something that will help your desired goal come to light.

I do this all of the time with my work goals and personal goals. Believe it or not, meeting Keith Richards was a goal.

Here’s how it all went down:

Several years ago, I read that he favors a specific restaurant in the city. I filed that tidbit away in my mind, along with visions of me being at the same restaurant at the same time and getting the chance to meet him.

Over time, I replayed our “meeting” in my head, imagining what it would be like to get to talk to him.

I also decided it was time to start eating at this restaurant. Coincidentally (or maybe not), my husband and I were invited to join another couple for dinner there. It actually took a couple of visits before I heard the magic words from our tablemate: “Keith Richards is sitting right in back of you.”

The Universe had delivered up an amazing opportunity. Now it was time for me to make the most of it.

Here’s where the “act in integrity” bit comes in. While I truly wanted to meet him, I had to do it in a way that honored both of us. I didn’t want to interrupt the dinner he was having with his family. I didn’t want to be one of those annoying fans who loses her mind when she sees someone famous. And I didn’t want to be disappointed.

So I waited until they finished eating and until his wife and daughter excused themselves to the ladies room. Then, like I’ve done this all of my life, I turned, placed my hand on his arm and said “Excuse me, you’re my favorite guitarist of all time.” That’s all I had to do. I had a clear vision, I believed it would happen, I put myself in a place where it would happen, and I acted in integrity.

The reward was introductions made, conversation enjoyed, photos taken, wineglasses clinked and hands shaken. The experience was everything you hope it will be when you meet someone you admire. And more.

Still think I’m crazy to believe that we can make amazing things happen? Try it for yourself. I challenge you to enjoy your own version of meeting Keith Richards.  I’d love to hear what that is!
